Strengthening Ukraine’s research excellence in the field of antimicrobial resistance under a One Health Approach

Raise awareness of AMR through collaboration with EU countries, and increase the R&I capacity of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) in Ukraine

SURE-AMR principles

SURE-AMR reflects a structural and strategic collaboration to strengthen Ukraine’s R&I ecosystem, support the country’s reconstruction and promote its European integration, while addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a critical public health threat identified by the European Commission and the World Health Organisation.

The conflict in Ukraine has increased the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes and accelerated their spread across Europe, due to an increase in prescriptions to hospitalised patients and the lack of policies to limit their administration to farm animals.

Antibiotics and resistance genes found in livestock manure used to fertilise fields end up in aquatic systems. Resistance genes are also found in urban wastewater, which is not removed in treatment plants and pollutes rivers and the water in them, eventually reaching homes.

The lack of data on antimicrobial resistance in Ukraine means that monitoring its spread in the country is limited and difficult to assess, and new policies based on scientific evidence and support are needed to address this challenge.

About SURE-AMR

Mission

SURE-AMR Mission

SURE-AMR aims to strengthen the research and innovation capabilities of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) to enhance its scientific reputation, attractiveness and networking opportunities, while promoting scientific excellence. In addition, the project aims to raise awareness and inform stakeholders about the challenges of antimicrobial resistance through a One Health approach.

In doing so, it serves as a compelling example of how science can act as a bridge for diplomacy and cooperation to address common challenges at both European and global levels, and catalyse progress towards shared goals.

Project Objectives

Establish IMBG as a leading center

of excellence in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), advancing Ukraine’s capacity to address this critical challenge in collaboration with the European Union.

Build long-term institutional resilience

to ensure IMBG’s sustainable excellence in research and innovation over time.

Strengthen IMBG's institutional networks

by fostering partnerships with prominent European institutions in AMR research, guided by the One Health approach.

Broaden IMBG's research horizons

through the transfer of knowledge, innovative practices, and expertise in AMR, rooted in the principles of the One Health approach.

Elevate the international visibility and impact

of IMBG and its researchers by enhancing both scientific expertise and cross-disciplinary capabilities.

SURE-AMR final Goals

The potential of Scientific Diplomacy

Science is one of the most powerful tools to promote prosperity, sustainable development, well-being and security. SURE-AMR emulates the potential of European cooperation and science diplomacy to directly support Ukraine’s reconstruction, EU integration and reform towards European standards amid accession negotiations.

Fundamentally, SURE-AMR aims to support the Ukrainian scientific community and its integration into the European R&I ecosystem by:

  1. Demonstrating Successful EU Collaboration.
  2. Raising Awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance.
  3. Advancing IMBG’s Pursuit of Excellence.
