Strengthening collaboration between UK and Ukraine

In March 2025, Iryna Kohut and Galyna Ryabukha presented the SURE-AMR project at the UK-Ukraine Research Twinning Showcase in Liverpool (United Kingdom)

The UK-Ukraine Research Twinning Showcase and Networking is an event that brings together researchers from both countries to strengthen research collaboration, showcase joint projects, facilitate networking, support Ukrainian academia and promote knowledge exchange. This event wants to highlight collaborative projects and foster future partnerships.

For Ukranians are very important this type of events in order not to be isolated and feel part of a bigger community” Galyna says.

Iryna and Galyna presented the European-funded project SURE-AMR, a collaborative initiative aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s capacity to monitor, research, and combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The project promotes knowledge exchange, training, and infrastructure development in partnership with Ukrainian institutions and plays a vital role in addressing global health challenges through international scientific cooperation. AMR is one of the most pressing global health threats, contributing to nearly 5 million deaths each year—a number that could rise significantly without urgent action. In Ukraine, the ongoing war has intensified antibiotic use, disrupted healthcare infrastructure, and limited access to diagnostics, further worsening the crisis.

In the context of Ukraine’s ongoing challenges, the need for innovative solutions in healthcare, digitalization, and scientific collaboration has never been more critical”, Iryna states.

At the event, they also introduced the BETA Tech Centre, a key partner of the SURE-AMR project and the institution where they currently work. The BETA Tech Centre serves as the Science for Ukraine coordinator in Spain and was the organization Galyna and Iryna reached out to at the onset of Russia’s invasion. Science for Ukraine is a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting the Ukrainian academic community during the ongoing war. They also spoke on behalf of the institution, emphasizing BETA Tech Centre’s commitment to collaborating with both UK and Ukrainian institutions.

The participation of Galyna and Iryna in the UK-Ukraine Research Twinning Showcase not only underscored the importance of international collaboration in times of crisis but also highlighted the impactful role of initiatives like SURE-AMR. As Ukraine continues to face immense challenges, fostering global scientific partnerships remains essential for resilience, innovation, and progress. Events like this demonstrate the power of solidarity in research and reaffirm the shared commitment to advancing science for the benefit of all.
