RIC 3: Analysis – Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS)

NGS
This Resaerch and Innovation Case (RIC) responds to the urgent need for advanced epidemiological research to effectively counteract the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Ukraine.

Its scientific objectives focus on implementing Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies and bioinformatics pipelines to enable high-resolution clonality and resistome analyses.

Within a war-related context, the project includes a comparative assessment of pre-war and current samples to better understand shifts in AMR dynamics driven by conflict-related factors.

The key activities include the establishment of a robust bioinformatics pipeline for data management, comprehensive sample preparation, and Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) across One Health environments, as well as the generation of a dedicated report on the effects of war on AMR dissemination.

This is led by Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) in partnership with University Klinic Bonn (UKB), National Medicines Institute (NMI), and Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG).

The main outputs will be the establishment of an NGS unit at IMBG and a methodological handbook on WGS approaches, supporting the project’s strategic goal of enabling real-time monitoring of pathogenic lineages and their transmission patterns.
